Boswellia Serrata
Boswellia serrata, another ayurvedic herb, also shows some promise as a remedy for joint health. "Boswella serrata is an excellent anti-inflammatory due to its specific inhibitory effect on 5-lipoxygenase, " explains Sonya Bucklew, director of marketing at Geni Inc. (Carmel, IN). "This inhibits the production of the enzymes responsible for inflammation."
In a placebo-controlled, double-blind crossover study of more than 30 patients who regularly took NSAIDs for osteoarthritis of the knee, researchers found that patients who received 333 mg of Boswellia serrata extract three times per day for eight weeks experienced lessening of knee pain and improved knee flexibility. Geni, which sponsored the research, will present the results May 14th-16th at Vitafoods International in Geneva, Switzerland. The company anticipates that the results will be published in early May.
