Natural Treatments for BPH
Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens) comes from a small palm tree found along the southeastern coast of the United States and the West Indies. A systematic review shows that saw palmetto improves symptoms of BPH and flow measures with few side effects.
Pygeum Africanum is an evergreen found in the mountains of Africa. The bark is composed of lipid-soluble phytosterols and pentacyclic triterpenes that appear to act synergistically to improve symptoms of BPH. A review of the clinical literature that involved more than 2,000 patients showed significant improvement in symptoms when objectively measured.
Green Tea Extract The active constituents in green tea are a family of polyphenols (catechins) and flavonols which possess potent antioxidant activity. Tannins, large polyphenol molecules, form the bulk of the active compounds in green tea, with catechins comprising nearly 90%. Several catechins are present in significant quantities; epicatechin (EC), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin gallate (ECG) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG makes up about 10-50% of the total catechin content and appears to be the most powerful of the catechins with antioxidant activity about 25-100 times more potent than vitamins C and E. A cup of green tea may provide 10-40mg of polyphenols and has antioxidant activity greater than a serving of broccoli, spinach, carrots or strawberries. Because the active compounds, the catechins, found in green tea are known to possess potent antioxidant activity, they may provide beneficial health effects by protecting the body from the damaging effects of oxidative damage from free radicals.
Pumpkin Seed Extract, from pumpkin seeds, has been used for at least the last 16,000 years, based on archaeological evidence in Mexico and North America. The seeds were used by many different aboriginal groups for expelling intestinal worms, for killing tapeworms and as a diuretic. The German Commission E recommends pumpkin seeds for treating urinary and prostate conditions, backed by many studies.
Lycopene is a carotenoid (like beta-carotene) that is responsible for giving tomatoes their red color. Lycopene is a proven antioxidant. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals, which may damage the body's cells. People who have diets rich in tomatoes, which contain lycopene, appear to have a lower risk of certain types of cancer, especially cancers of the prostate, lung, and stomach.
Zinc is an essential mineral and is important in prostate gland function and the growth of the reproductive organs. It is required for protein synthesis and collagen formation and promotes a healthy immune system and the healing of wounds. Zinc also allows acuity of smell and taste and protects the liver from chemical damage. Sufficient intake and absorption of zinc is needed to maintain the proper concentration of vitamin E in the blood.
Bioperine
Bioperine is a standardized extract from the fruit of Piper nigrum L (black pepper) or Piper longum L (long pepper). It contains 95 percent of piperine. Bioperine? may be co-administered with various nutrients for both human and animal health.
Bioperine is an extract obtained from the black pepper fruit that is cultivated in the damp, nutrient-rich soil regions of southern India . The delicate pepper berries are harvested just prior to ripening and then sun dried to assure optimum maturity and quality. The extract of piperine, called Bioperine in the patented form, has been clinically tested in the United States . Bioperine significantly enhances the bioavailability of various supplement nutrients through increased absorption.
