Healthy is Beautiful

Let’s talk hair. I was born with golden blonde hair but as I got older my hair started to darken. At 15, my mom took me to the salon to get my first set of highlights. I was hooked. I loved getting my hair done. In college, I bit the bullet and went platinum blonde. I loved my platinum hair so much that I kept it up for 9 years. That’s a lot of bleaching. I finally had to call it quits because my scalp developed a sensitivity to the bleach. It got so bad that almost instantly my scalp would start to burn, figuratively and literally. I was also frustrated that my hair had become so brittle and would break off. I decided to try and salvage my hair by returning to a shade closer to my natural color. It’s been a few years now and my hair definitely feels a lot better! It wasn’t until recently, however, that it started to grow.

I’ve been going to the same hairdresser for the past 6 years now; it’s safe to say I trust her. When she asks how much I want to cut I always tell her to cut whatever is necessary to be healthy. A few months ago she cut off about two inches; This is a lot for a girl that has been trying to grow her hair past her shoulders for years. My ponytail went from substantial to a nub. Somehow, by my next visit my hair had grown two inches! I’ve taken biotin and pre-natal vitamins before and never had this kind of success. What changed you ask? I started taking Immune Boost. Immune Boost is packed with vitamins and minerals; so I did some research to find out which ones were contributing to my hair growth.

1. Vitamin A helps our skin glands produce sebum, the skin’s natural lubricant. Sebum helps to keep the scalp and hair moisturized which promotes hair growth.

2. B Vitamins are crucial to the formation of red blood cells. Red blood cells make sure the hair follicles get the oxygen and nutrients needed to maintain a healthy scalp.

3. Vitamin C is essential for the production of collagen. Collagen has been found to help strengthen the protein that hair is made of. It even helps the regrowth of hair and can even reduce the appearance of gray hairs.

4. Zinc helps hair follicle tissue grow and repair as well as function properly. In fact, hair loss can be a sign of a Zinc deficiency. Studies show that Zinc Deficiency related hair loss can be effectively treated with Zinc Supplementation.

While doing my research, I found that Vitamin D is not only good for your bones but is also really good for hair and skin health. In a 2012 study researchers found that Vitamin D can help create new hair follicles allowing for thicker hair and less hair loss. I’ll be honest here, I really didn’t know much about Vitamin D. Turns out, Vitamin D is considered a pro-hormone and we don’t make it, we synthesize it when sunlight hits our skin. I’m pretty fair, so I always put on sunscreen which does inhibit Vitamin D synthesis. Vitamin D is also found in foods like milk and fish. I drink milk, but in order to get the recommended dosage (600 IU) for an adult under the age of 70 I’d need to drink five 8oz glasses of milk a day. Adults over 70 are recommended to consume 800 IUs. Vitamin D deficiency is actually a global health problem that affects over a billion people. I figured I should give Vitamin D supplements a try;  there’s a possibility I might be deficient and it will help my hair grow!

Lucky for me, Xendureance makes a product with Vitamin D3 in it called Omega+D3. Naturally, I went back to my research to see how I could benefit from Omegas. It turns out Omega 3s have a ton of health benefits including being good for your skin! Luscious hair and glowing skin? Yes please! The most important types of Omega 3 Fatty acids are ALA, EPA, and DHA. EPA or eicosapentaenoic acid regulates the production of oil in our skin which keeps the skin hydrated and prevents acne. EPA can also protect against the harmful effects UV rays have on the skin by blocking the release of UV-induced enzymes that diminish collagen and cause wrinkles. It also helps to repair and protect damage from the sun because it is packed with antioxidants and is an anti-inflammatory agent. Like Vitamin D, most people don’t get enough Omega 3 Fatty acids. I love a good filet of salmon but it’s not something I eat everyday. Omega + D3 for the win!

I’m starting to realize that supplements do more than just improve fitness routines. Being healthy means you take care of all aspects of your body inside and out. We can workout until we’re blue in the face but if we don’t nourish our insides the rest of our body will not reflect our good health. I guess the saying ‘Healthy is Beautiful’ really is true.
