Is CBD the most important supplement to come along in the last 30 years? For insomniacs, it may well be.
Cannabis has been romanticized and criminalized for years. Research, however, has shown that cannabinoids or the plant’s active ingredients, provide too many health benefits to ignore.
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is one of the most vital regulatory systems within the human body which is comprised of a group of molecules called cannabinoids” and their cannabinoid receptors. There are about 80+ cannabinoid compounds in the cannabis plant. Think of cannabinoids as the body’s own THC. The ECS keeps internal bodily functions stable and controls how we think, feel and react. The cannabinoids we consume interact with receptors in the body to produce different effects.
All cannabinoids, including CBD, attach themselves to certain receptors in the body to produce their effects. The human body produces certain cannabinoids on its own. It has two receptors for cannabinoids called CB1 receptors and CB2 receptors.
CB1 receptors are found all around the body, but many of them are in the brain.
The CB1 receptors in the brain deal with coordination and movement, pain, motions and mood, thinking, appetite and memories, among others.
CB2 receptors are more common in the immune system. They affect inflammation and pain.
CBD may help with a wide variety of ailments; diabetes, Crohn’s disease, depression and yes, insomnia. For those of us who are not getting the hours of deep sleep we need, how does CBD assist with sleep and recovery?
Evidence suggests that hemp oil from CBD can improve quality of sleep and reduce anxiety. CBD does affect the rem cycle. One study found that CBD blocked anxiety-induced REM sleep suppression resulting in better quality of sleep. Another study found that the hemp oil reduced participant’s cortisol levels, which are linked to anxiety and stress in the body. Reduce your stress, anxiety and sleep better!
