We all workout for different reasons. Sometimes it is for stress relief, sometimes it is to get into our favorite jeans. For those with a competitive mindset, they use exercise to make it onto the podium.

A study from McMaster University in Ontario, on 65 and older participants, says that exercise appears to keep skin looking younger, and later in life it may even help reverse skin aging.

"I don't want to over-hype the results, but, really, it was pretty remarkable to see," said Dr. Tarnopolsky, himself a middle-aged exerciser. Under a microscope, the volunteers' skin "looked like that of a much younger person, and all that they had done differently was exercise.”

Increases Blood Flow

When you get your heart pumping after a long run or an hour long yoga class, you are providing your skin with an ample supply of oxygenated blood. Have you ever noticed how you glow after a good workout? That is increased blood flow and possibly a mood boost brought on by feeling energized!

Helps You Sleep Soundly

We all need sleep. If you don’t get enough - who wants to look in the mirror?! Exercise has been thought to help people fall asleep faster, sleep sounder and help with better workouts the next day. Exercise has also helped some reduce sleep medications and experience less daytime grogginess. There are A LOT of other very beneficial health reasons to get quality of sleep, but maybe the “looking in the mirror” resonates with most of us.

Keeps Metabolism High

The University of California San Francisco did a study that found a link between regular exercise and how fast telomeres slow. If you exercise on a regular basis, it takes longer for telomeres to slow, and therefore your cells will live longer. 

Less Stress

Exercise is a great medication for our stressful lives. Exercise takes us away from the mental challenges that infiltrate our days and seem never ending. Hiking, running, lifting, biking; all activities that push us physically, release a chemical in the brain called endorphins. Endorphins help us release stress and anxiety and can positively effect our mental and physical well-being. They can also help fight the negative effects of aging. So exercise should be in your accountability list - exercise more - stress less - and slow down your aging clock.

Exercise can help improve posture. It can possibly provide a better bone density test - yes strength or resistance training plays a part in healthy bones. Exercise helps reduce muscle loss, which is experienced as you age. And exercise just fuels our energy and that alone might make us look younger!
